RIP Rubber Duck, CW McCall passes

C.W. McCall, famous for his CB slanguage song "Convoy" has gone 10-7 for good. Long way from local bread commercials.

And FTR, I give Convoy and CB Culture partial credit for the national treasure that is Smokey and the Bandit. That alone should be good enough for St. Peter.

Great novelty song in an absolutely horrible movie.

When I was a kid, I would call in Wolf Creek Pass as a request to the local radio station. I remember being quite surprised when I discovered that Wolf Creek Pass and Pagosa Springs were real places.

And one of the great lines in American music history is from Convoy.

Well, we shot the line and we went for broke
With a thousand screamin' trucks
And eleven long-haired Friends of Jesus
In a chartreuse micro-bus

Damn, I remember when CB Radios were all the rage. My Dad got one and I used to go in the car at night and talk on the radio to my buddies. Everyone had one for about a year or two.

Smokey and the Bandit was at the pinnacle of that.

My handle was Cap'n Crunch.

Ours are sitting in the basement of the farmhouse. Big base unit and antenna.
3 cobras and Kraco for the cars and tractor.
Had to unhook the Base unit from the antenna during lightning storms

An old friend of mine is still using and collecting old Browning base radios. They make a ping sound when the mic is keyed.
I had a Midland in my kitchen.

I doubt if I've heard that song in decades, but I could probably write the lyrics out word-for-word. Hell of a one hit wonder.

RIP
