ESPN's Mel Kiper 2-RD Mock (4.13.22)

29. Kansas City Chiefs (via MIA/SF)
Andrew Booth Jr., CB, Clemson

The loss in free agency of cornerback Charvarius Ward shouldn't go unnoticed. He had developed into a really solid player. The Kansas City defense improved as the 2021 season went along, but it has to get deeper in the secondary. Booth is a smooth 6-foot corner with good ball skills who played both outside and in the slot in college.

30. Kansas City Chiefs
George Karlaftis, DE, Purdue

No wide receiver? Let me explain. First, the Chiefs also have two second- and two third-round picks. They could take one (or two) wide receivers with those selections. This is a deep class, and they could find better value there. And second, defensive end is a need as well. If Karlaftis is on the board, he'd be an ideal end next to Chris Jones, who does his best work from the interior. Karlaftis didn't always get home to quarterbacks last season (only 4.5 sacks), but he created pressures in their face.

50. Kansas City Chiefs (via MIA)
Skyy Moore, WR, Western Michigan

Happy now, Chiefs fans? Here's a speedy 5-foot-10 wide receiver who will look just a little similar to Tyreek Hill. I've called Moore the most underrated player in this class. I love what he does after the catch -- he forced 30 missed tackles last season, which ranked second in FBS among receivers -- and he doesn't drop passes. He has huge hands. He's not going to be a straight replacement for Hill, but he'll contribute as a rookie.

62. Kansas City Chiefs
Jalen Tolbert, WR, South Alabama

How about one more wideout for the Chiefs? Tolbert had 2,559 receiving yards over the past two seasons. At 6-foot-1 and 194 pounds, he has the ability to run every route, and coach Andy Reid can scheme him open around the formation. This lets Kansas City try to replace Tyreek Hill with two wideouts (I also gave it Skyy Moore earlier in the round), both of whom will need some time to adjust to the NFL.

I like Moore a lot, but I might prefer to gamble on George Pickens and Calvin Austin's upside with those 2nd round picks.

I also would have moved up from #29 to #26 for DT Wyatt and nabbed a CB later in the draft.

We aren't drafting a CB in the 1st

WTF? Veach loves CB's in late rounds that take a year or more to develop. Taking 2 WR's in the 1st 6 is stupid. 1 is fine and dandy. We need defensive help.

Chiefnj2 04-13-2022 07:23 AM

I don't understand why people don't see CB as a big need. Very close to DE. Allen and Burrow carved us up and went toe-to-toe with Mahomes/Hill. Pass rush will certainly help, but the secondary wasn't nearly as good as people want to think.

I honestly can't believe Kiper still gets paid to do this.

I actually like this draft.

Yeah, I'd have to see the whole thing to know what else was available around our picks, but coming out of the first with Karlaftis and Booth would be a homerun in my opinion. Obviously a lot would rather have a WR with that Booth pick....that being said I don't think we should be reaching based on position alone.

You aren't gonna replace Tyreek with any of these WR's that will be available at our pick, so don't try. Use those picks to build the rest of the team.

My only beef is doubling up on WRs. I wouldn’t hate it though.

Using picks on WR's IS building the rest of the team.

Sure, if one of the WR's you love falls or something.

But don't pick one just to pick one there is what I'm saying. I'm at the point that WR seems like a prime pick in the 2nd round at this point.

Well that's exactly what this mock did - took WR's in the 2nd round because of value.

O.city 04-13-2022 07:54 AM

I didn't clarify very well so that's on me, but I'm talking more to those penciling in a WR to the Chiefs in the first because of the Hill trade.

Yep... with the current price tag no reason not to stock up. Especially when we only have 3 and 2 of them don't have deals past this year.
