Chiefs love the Southeast

Matt Derrick was on the Locked On Chiefs podcast and pointed out that the Chiefs love drafting guys out of the Southeastern region.

Treylon Burks
Andrew Booth
George Pickens
Sam Williams
Devonte Wyatt
Kaiir Elam
Lewis Cine
John Metchie
Lewis Cine
Calvin Austin
Jalen Tolbert
Kingsley Enagbare
Josh Paschal
Roger McCreary
Venus Jones Jr.
Alontae Taylor
Jalyn Amour-Davis
Markquese Bell

All of these guys are fits already, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few being Chiefs after the draft.

Will be interesting to revisit.

Mississippi is the place man. That’s where all the bargains are. Ole Miss or Miss State have those guys who were talented enough to get into the bigger SEC schools like Bama, LSU and Georgia but couldn’t due to one reason or another.

There’s always value in those schools.

Dak Prescott
Chris Jones
Montez Sweat
AJ Brown
DK Metcalf
Elijah Moore
Willie Gay
Dawson Knox
Elgton Jenkins
Jeffrey Simmons
Preston Smith
Gabe Jackson

Goddamn basically all of those players were steals compared to where they were drafted. Yes Breeland Speaks sucked, but IDGAF keep going back to that well.

Sam Williams step on up!

I'd take Burks, Elam and Williams with the first 3 picks.

Most of the talent comes from there this isn't surprising

Tolbert train, baby!

Lewis Cine so good he made the list twice

I think Elam would be a great addition for us. He is the big, fast and physical corner we like. He has flaws for sure. He is not a high twitch guy and is pretty stiff in change of direction. He reminds me of Ward with more aggression. There is a good chance he is available at the end of the 1st and we have a need.

I know Burt Vee likes the diamonds in the rough, but this would be a great pick if he is able to get it.

While true, the Chiefs still draft more guys from that region than the average team.

There’s certainly a pattern.

He's talking about scouting regions, not the SEC. I do agree though, alot of the talent comes from it.

Most teams break their scouting team up into 6 or 7 divisions: Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, West Coast, Southwest, Northwest, Central Plains, etc.

The Southeast might cover, for example:

UCF
Florida
South Florida
Florida State
Georgia
FIU
South Carolina
Alabama
LSU
NC State
Tennessee
Kentucky
Auburn
North Carolina
Clemson
East Carolina
Georgia Tech
Georgia Southern
Mississippi
FAU
Miami
Louisville
Duke
UAB
Memphis

Edit: Here's an approximate Midwest region for comparison. Obviously alot of talent is coming from here too but we don't see Veach taking much out of it.

Ohio State
Michigan
Illinois
Michigan State
Purdue
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Indiana
Cincinnati
Iowa State
Iowa
Missouri
Nebraska
Kent State
Grand Valley State
Ohio
Northwestern
Miami (Ohio)
Ball State
Western Michigan
Toledo
Central Michigan
Notre Dame
Akron
Eastern Michigan

Veach was a Southeast regional scout with the Eagles before following Reid to KC. He knows those programs and players well. A certain level of trust is formed...strong ties forged.

That's why, up to this point, the majority of his college and pro personnel moves as a GM have been former Southeast players.

Why do you like him? He does have soft hands. I like how he catches the ball. But he does NOT create separation against inferior competition. Most of his catches, there’s a defender there within a step. What are you seeing?
