RIP - Mills Lane

If you think of a boxing referee, Mills Lane is probably your mental picture

He was so iconic he was also the referee in MTVs claymation series 'Celebrity Deathmatch'

Also had one of many People's Court knockoffs, 'Judge Mills Lane' for several years.

He was the ref for a main event boxing match I saw in Atlantic City.

He was a legend.

R.I.P.

I interviewed him in my sportswriter days in Savannah — he was a Savannah native, from a prominent family. He was terrific, one of the most colorful and quotable guys ever. Gave me as much of his time as I needed.

That's awesome
Any "takes" from that interview that have stuck with you?
Love to hear them.

Why Not? 12-06-2022 11:38 PM

Certainly not going to pretend to be this huge boxing fan but I watched all the big fights as a kid in the 80s and 90s and have periodically watched title fights (and any US Olympic fight) since then. I could sit here for eternity and never name off the top of my head any other boxing referee but I immediately knew who Mills Lane was when I heard this news. RIP to a guy who managed to basically become a household name during that time.

Yeah, boxing isn't what it use to be. They're all getting up there. RIP

It’s been over 30 years, and the details have faded. But in response to one question, he replied “Does a bear shit in the woods?”
