If you think of a boxing referee, Mills Lane is probably your mental picture
He was so iconic he was also the referee in MTVs claymation series 'Celebrity Deathmatch' Also had one of many People's Court knockoffs, 'Judge Mills Lane' for several years. Front row seat when Tyson tried to make a meal of Holyfield https://deadline.com/wp-content/uplo...resize=285,214 |

He was the ref for a main event boxing match I saw in Atlantic City.
He was a legend. R.I.P. |
I interviewed him in my sportswriter days in Savannah — he was a Savannah native, from a prominent family. He was terrific, one of the most colorful and quotable guys ever. Gave me as much of his time as I needed.

Certainly not going to pretend to be this huge boxing fan but I watched all the big fights as a kid in the 80s and 90s and have periodically watched title fights (and any US Olympic fight) since then. I could sit here for eternity and never name off the top of my head any other boxing referee but I immediately knew who Mills Lane was when I heard this news. RIP to a guy who managed to basically become a household name during that time.

Yeah, boxing isn't what it use to be. They're all getting up there. RIP
