The Butterfly Effect- Chiefs Edition
 

Okay, simple rules to this bud week thought exercise. Change any one single play in a game to affect a better/different outcome for the Chiefs. Curious how many plays it would take to get a theoretical dynasty, or just a view to how close to dominant we’ve been. I’ll start:

1. Dee Ford lines up onsides ‘8 AFCCG
2. Eric Fisher’s Achilles doesn’t tear ‘20 AFCCG
3. Tyreek Hill makes the end zone at half ‘21 AFCCG

Not hard to argue the Chiefs are going for SB win #5 in a row if those 3 plays just ended a little different. Of course the butterfly effect could also have negative impact as a result but let’s assume not to change too much other history and keep it light and fun.

Some more plays to think about,

- no end zone PI call vs the Raiders in their walk off win
- Kelce doesn’t fumble in Q4 vs the bengals this year

What else ya got?

Chris Jones doesn’t say bad words to Ryan and we beat the Colts.. We are 15-2 and no doubt the #1 seed..

Luck doesn’t pickup the running backs fumble and score and we win against the Colts playoff game.

Mahomes hits Hardman for the TD to win it at the end of regulation instead of settling for a field goal to send it to OT last year in the AFCCG.

This. Which would mean we’re all not scurrying to book tickets Atlanta now…

This thread makes me anxious.

On the flip side...Jones doesn't bat down a Jimmy G pass. We're called for a late hit on the sideline and SF runs out clock.

Buffalo doesn't screw the pooch at the end of regulation.

100% right, which is why I would actually NOT change a single thing prior to our 2019 Super Bowl win. That one took a lot of luck. You go tinkering around with some changes and we may have 0 SB wins at the moment.

I also wouldn't change a single thing before the Mahomes era. You go back and start giving Alex Smith playoff wins and suddenly there's a chance that we don't even trade up for Mahomes. **** that timeline.

The "problem" with exercises like these, both in thinking about sports or life in general, is that people tend to post script to get the result they wanted. For instance, to use one of your examples, what you are or at least could be alluding to is that if Eric Fisher doesn't tear his tendon, the Chiefs win the SB that year. The reality is, we have no way to know if that was true or not. We know that a healthy Fisher would've given us a better chance, but that's all we really know.

So basically the one thing we pretty much know for sure is that if Dee Ford isn't offsides, we win that AFCCG. However, contrary to popular (around these parts, anyway) theory, there is no guarantee that we beat the Rams.

And, just to cover your top 3 examples, Tyreek wasn't particularly close to scoring even though the play started close to the end zone. Playing with that one is akin to "Gordon should've been sent home " in '14. Nothing good came or would've come out of those scenarios.

In a game of inches, be glad we are all packing 12.
