Another SB hypothetical
Sorry if this has already been discussed…
On the infamous holding play late in the 4th, what if Mahomes hit JuJu for a TD? If the flag is still thrown, do you accept the penalty and negate the TD? At that point would the “burn out the clock” strategy justify taking six points off the board?!? And was Mahomes smart enough to overthrow that pass on purpose so it wasn’t possible for Andy to take the TD instead of the penalty? If he was 100% certain the play would be flagged, it’s a genius move… Just random stuff running through my head… |
Take 7 points off the board with 1:54 left in the game?
|
**** no you dont take that penalty. You put it in the endzone, you keep the points. Those are never guaranteed.
|
I'm pretty sure Mahomes DID purposefully float it so no one had a chance at it. Before the ball even hits the ground he's back up from being hit and yelling at the refs for a holding penalty
|
Ed, I'm afraid you've reached this stage of fandom. "What if a tiny Mahomes..."

Taking the penalty is exactly the same as Jet sliding at the 1, declining the td in favor of running the clock. First down, run all the time out, boot your chip shot to win. Defense had stepped on their dicks all night. Up 8, it took Hurts just over 2 minutes to score 8 points and tie. Not giving the Eagles the ball with about a minute 40 and a timeout so Spags could trot his vaunted prevent defense out there. The final 5 minutes of the game was executed to perfection. |

The flag wasnt in the air til the ball was in the EZ. I highly doubt he purposely threw an uncatchable ball on 3rd down with 2 minutes left in the SB when you need to convert to ice the game. Hoping for a flag there, especially after not getting a worse foul earlier in the game on another 3rd down, would have been foolish. He was going to JuJu, saw the hold, still went his way, and pointed out the hold hoping they would call it. |

Figured this might be a contested debate…
I’m on the ‘take the penalty’ side. But I can only imagine how hot of a topic this would’ve been with the media afterwards. Probably would have meant more meetings with the competition committee about rule changes… All a moot point now, but interesting to think about. Especially since we have nothing else to think about until April… |
I'd take the penalty and not think twice about it.

Take the penalty.
Under no circumstance do you chose to put the defense back out there if you aren't forced to. |

He would've 10000% taken the penalty. Ask the question the other way: if you're the Eagles, what would you have rather the Chiefs have done? And the answer is - very clearly - scored the TD. |
