My trade down mock

Summary
2.35 Mazi Smith DT Michigan
2.46 Isaiah Foskey DE Notre Dame
3.95 Jonathan Mingo WR Ole Miss
4.122 Jartavius Martin S/CB Illinois
4.134 Carter Warren OT Pitt
5.166 Yaya Diaby DE Louisville
6.178 Matt Landers WR Arkansas
7.250 Tiyon Evans RB Louisville

Chiefs trade the 31st pick to the colts for them to move up and secure that 5th year option for Hendon Hooker.

Chiefs receive colts 2nd at 35, 4th at 106 and 5th at 162.

Colts receive chiefs 1st at 31, 6th at 217 and 7th at 249.

Chiefs select;

2nd round 35th: Mazi Smith DT, Michigan, risky pick here for me but his upside is too good to pass up with athletic traits like dontari Poe. He’ll be great on twists and stunts with his power and athleticism.

Chiefs trade up to 46 with the patriots. Pats receive the chiefs 2nd at 63, the 4th from colts at 106 and the 5th from the colts at 162.

Chiefs select DE Norte Dame Isaiah Foskey. He checks all the boxes for what the chiefs are looking for in an edge.

6’ 5’’, 264 lbs, 34’’ ARM, 4.58 40, 10-Yard Split of 1.66, 34” Vertical, 10’ 5’’ broad, 7.28 3-Cone Drill, 4.41 20-Yd Shuttle and 22 reps on the bench. He has great hand usage and is an explosive ascending player.

3rd round, pick 95; Jonathan Mingo WR Ole Miss
6’2” 220 lbs, 10 3/8” hands, 4.46 40, 39.5” vert
Chiefs are looking for a bigger bodied WR and find one here in Mingo. He hasn’t put up big numbers but he’s a good route runner and has good hands.

4th, pick 122 Jartavius Martin safety/cb Illinois
I’m not sure he lasts this long but this kid is has some interesting skills. 5’11” 194, 4.46 40, 44” vert, 11’ 1” broad and 15 reps on the bench.

4th, pick 134 Carter Warren OT Pitt
He’s your massive RT. 6’5 1/2” 311 lbs with 35 3/8” arms. Played LT at Pitt but he’s a better fit at RT.

5th, pick 166 Yaya Diaby DE Louisville
Freak edge prospect at 6’3” 263 lbs, 33 7/8” arms 4.51 40, 1.56 10 yard split, 37” vert, 10’ broad. Physical but raw. Had 9 sacks last season.

6th, pick 178 Matt Landers WR Arkansas
6’4” 200 lbs 4.37 40, 37” vert, 10’10” broad
This kid plays with some nasty. He’s aggressive and plays a little cocky with his run after the catch. QB wasn’t great finding him. Most of his highlights, he’s wide open or under thrown. Serious top gear to pull away. And he really fights for yac and has surprising start and stop for his size. I love his potential with mahomes and his ability to get him the ball downfield and he compliments our other smaller wrs with his size, length and leaping ability.

7th, pick 250 Tiyon Evans RB Louisville
5’9” 225 lbs 4.52 40
Short, stocky, powerful back that has a great 2nd gear and a home run threat with 21 mph and good movement but injuries have killed him. He’s been hurt a lot through his college career but he has athletic traits to be a great nfl rb. If he can stay healthy, he has the size to fight for tough yards, good hands, blocking ability and top speed to take it to the house.

Why isn't Matt Landers higher on draft boards?

Dunerdr 04-17-2023 10:06 AM

I dont think Mingo will be there that late but i cant say id have changed anything about it.

I love this mock. The chiefs getting freaky fast and big, simultaneously.

I'd love to have Mazi and Foskey on this team. Not as much as Benton and Foskey but very close. Would really go a long way for the future of that DL. It just scares me a bit to pour so many resources into it so early all the time while neglecting the offense. It's what the Packers did and it ****ing killed them.

So effectively the Chiefs trade 31 and 63 (and some late round change) for 35 and 46?

I could talk myself into that. I probably wouldn't go that direction with those two picks, but I like how you managed to get up into a nice spot in the 2nd without too much damage done; just moving down a handful of spots.

Don't like losing the 5th year option but to move up nearly 20 spots in the 2nd, that's a relatively small price to pay.

I like the thought, though.

Yes, the sweet spot for value in this draft IMO is around 40-50. So, we didn’t lose much moving back 4 spots from 31-35 other than the 5th year option and the talent at 46 is way better than 63, especially for the DEs that we covet. Getting two players in the top 50 was the goal.

Of all the mocks I've done, trading back like this has left me the most satisfied.

DJ's left nut 04-17-2023 07:28 PM

Problem is that I've run that Colts trade through a couple machines and it wouldn't accept them.

And if they did, it's still so much easier as an abstract exercise. Once you're sitting there at 31 and have a guy or two you REALLY like, it's a much tougher sell.

We have Andy Reid and PM. And our oline is solid. We need a dline that can keep the pressure off of mahomes. We need a defense to keep the score down. We drafted defense last year and hit on those picks. I don’t think we win the sb without those rookies making big contributions on defense. As long as Kelce is producing, he will get all the targets anyway. Look at the attached image. How are the targets gonna be distributed? Toney has to get at least 70 this year? And skyy gets 50 plus? And they should. Pacheco has to get more touches and targets too. We need to see what we have. We can still pick a WR in the 3rd and get an RB late. I love Landers potential late. And I like wrs with size to compliment toney and skyy and most of the top wr prospects are small. So, let’s get big and fast on defense and pick bigger wrs later where there is better value.

I feel like we missed an opportunity to trade down with the titans. They had to have inquired with chiefs to get that 5th year option for a qb? We could have moved back from 31 to 41 and drafted keion white or BJ ojulari. Is uzomah that much better than white Or ojulari?

Yes…he is.
