A Level Headed Review Week 3 2023

1. Montrell Washington - This was a great pickup from the Broncos, originally a 6th round pick in the 2022 draft. I felt much more comfortable with him back taking PR/KR. The second quarter PR where he got hit by his own team mate and then took what seemed like 5 more hits before going down was nerve wracking but he managed to handle it well. He seems to have the ability to get more than just a couple positive yards on punts. We may have very well seen the last of Richie James.

2. Pop Pacheco - was gouging the defense. He is really starting to become the complete back with catching out of the backfield and finding the gaps to hit. Side note CEH is starting to run the ball decently, especially in garbage time, and is still a nice threat to catch out of the backfield.

3. McKinnon - is picking back up where he left off last year with being that red zone relief valve. Good to see he is still has the knack to find the end zone, I feel like he will be a incredibly valuable target for Patrick again this year, if not the teams second leading receiver behind Kelce.

4. Chiefs D - is continuing to get better and better. Turnovers, McDuffie stripping the ball, Gay recovering and Reid tipping the ball for Edwards to pick were both things of beauty. The Chiefs have the youngest D in the league average of 24 years old. That is astonishing. Chris Jones with some big sacks, glad he is back, he is going to be the motor that really powers this defense to great things. Mike Danna's name was called quite a bit today. Glad to see he is starting to be the force we need him to be with a sack and QB hit.

5. Pushing the ball up the field with under a minute in the first half up 31-0. I'm not sure I agree with this. Especially needlessly putting Patrick in harms way. I understand stepping on throats, but Chicago appeared all but dead at that point in the game. Even if they take the opening kickoff and get 7 they are still 4 scores down.

6. Rice - Patrick seems to be getting more comfortable with him hitting him a couple times over the middle and getting just 1 yard shy of a TD each time.

7. The Jawaan Taylor penalties are maddening. I noticed FOX didn't have the "down the line" camera view available for his penalties. They are really going to try and make an example of him while not calling anyone else for it. It's funny how it didn't pop up until the 2nd quarter almost like someone sent a message to the Ref crew to "remember" this penalty. Fortunately for this game it doesn't matter but if it continues it's going to bite us eventually. PTW started the second half while Taylor walked the sideline and was in at RT until Smith went down at LT. The commentators mentioned that Taylor isn't being coached to line up like that so it's a self adjustment he will need to make.

8. Butker - after struggles last year he seems to have figured it out and I feel much more comfortable seeing those XP's and FG's splitting the uprights instead of angling one way or the other. The 41 yard field goal was just 100% money split the uprights. Speaking of uprights the nailing of the goal post on the kickoff was one of the coolest things - never seen that before, I have seen the crossbar get hit but it takes talent to hit the upright on a kickoff.

9. PTW - got smoked by the DE on the Gabbert INT. He seems to play the RT position very well but he looked foolish on the left side when Smith went out. Hard to tell if the INT was on Gabbert bad read or PTW getting smoked.

10. The Offensive line in front of Patrick, kept him clean today. No sacks.

11. Andy Reid passes Tom Landry to go to 4th all time in wins with todays victory.

Outside of injuries and Rice's drops, it was a perfect game.

Let's hope Smith isn't out long-term because there's some great pass rushers in the AFC.

I know a lot of people want to say the refs are ****ing the Chiefs or whatever (not saying you're saying that in the OP), but the whole Taylor thing is exactly like every other time the NFL wants the refs to concentrate on something...... the refs completely ****ing **** it up.

Last year it was roughing the passer... and not just the sack/fumble recovery in the Raiders game, but it was a clown show for weeks across the league.

Same thing here. It sucks for Taylor that he got called out in week one, but the refs will continue to ****ing botch this shit because it's what they do.

And you're doing a great job with these. Not a ton to talk about in this one, which is a good thing when playing a team as awful as the Bears.

We did what we were supposed to do against a bad team.

Yeah I don't think it's intentional - It just felt strange - and I wasn't paying attention enough to that in the 1st Q to see what his alignment was like - but all the sudden in the 2nd Q we get a couple of those dumb illegal formation penalties .

We're starting to see Mahomes trust his WR's more and more.

Rice had a bad drop with Gabbert throwing him the ball, but I'm encouraged by him and Skyy.

Botch ?? Nah, Taylor needs to clean his manure up and play by the rules now. Will he ??? Remains to be seen. He may be driving 5mph over the speed limit most of the time BUT it's still speeding whether it's 5 or 10 over the speed limit.

Yeah - I forgot to mention this - I want to see the snap counts because it seemed like Ross was out there a lot but only targeted once that I can remember. I'm fairly certain he had significantly more snaps than Toney. Which is probably due to Toney's injury status, but the more game speed action we can get Ross now the better he will be later.

Do you feel he was lined up wrong on the penalty at the end of the 2nd half?

RedinTexas 09-24-2023 05:41 PM

I wasn't able to see too much, but I was not pleased with Gabbert as our backup coming into the game and I can't say that he's eased my mind. We need to put the full court press on Henne to come back, especially after Patrick tweaked the ankle/knee.

I saw a couple screenshots and it really didn't seem like it... at this point it's more like don't go 1mph over the speed limit, and you might want to go a few under just in case.

The better example last year is probably the offensive linemen downfield penalties (considering they REALLY ****ed up the roughing the passer stuff)... dude's were technically downfield a little at times, but not only was it splitting hairs several times, it was also completely unnecessary to call it in some cases as it wasn't giving any advantage to anyone.

To be fair - the first INT was 50/50 on Gabbert and PTW just getting absolutely smoked by the RDE. The second INT was all on Rice, ball hit him in the hands and he deflected it to a defender. Gabbert should be given a pass on the 2 picks today.

If it is intentional, I suspect it will stop. Mahomes injury happened because of the penalty. Without it, Mahomes is standing on the sideline with another TD on his resume, and no injury/near injury as a result.
