Should the NFL change the rules for pass interference on underthrown passes?

I've seen a lot of folks talking about this, including Mitchell Schwartz. The thought is that it rewards the QB for making a bad throw and it's impossible for DB's to defend when the WR purposefully uses it to get the call.

What do you think?

I do. I think they should call defensive holding MORE though but not call PI on this shit. Defensive holding screws the entire play up most of the times and CBs get away with it way too much.

They can barely describe what a completed pass or uncatchable ball is. Now you want to add underthrown ball to that mix?

They should use the NCAA rule.

15 yards and automatic first down. Tired of these 50 yard penalties.

This is the answer.

I don't really know how you change it but in the case of the Bills the other night, he's gotta get his hands on the dude off the LOS. IF you get beat like that, it is what it is.

No, they shouldn't call defensive holding. They shouldn't call anything. They shouldn't reward the offense with a first down for a shitty throw.

I'm for that, but I think you'd get more penalties that way, not less. Guys would be grabbing and holding all the time.

Bearcat 11-15-2023 01:59 PM

We'll call it the Tom Brady Rule.

I'd love to say leave it up to the refs to know what should be called, but we know how that goes even when there are relatively strict guidelines much less figuring out DPI in those situations.... but, I agree there's a difference in who initiates contact and even more gray area of whether the defender had a chance to locate the ball and so forth.

I understand the issue, but this is a bad example. Jeudy would have caught that ball if the DB didn't run into him before it got there.

No more outlawing all the ways the Bills find to lose games

tredadda 11-15-2023 02:02 PM

I do think it should be changed as it is too easy to exploit for offenses.

Maybe, but not necessarily. A penalty on 3rd or 4th down still severely punishes the defense by giving an automatic 1st down. The Broncos would have gotten a 1st down the other night after the penalty. Less yardage but still a 1st down.

Hail Mary's are interesting but they never call PI on a Hail Mary anyway. I don't believe NCAA has a bigger problem than the NFL when it comes to players getting tackled on a Hail Mary.

I agree here. In the Denver game it didn't matter bc it only got them 17 yards but I think it's a bad idea to reward a bad throw getting 30+ yards.

Kinda surprised teams aren't trying to purposefully do this on cover 0 blitzes to get big yardage.

MagicHef 11-15-2023 02:05 PM

I think I'm in favor of the 15 yard max, but the problem is that if a DB had a choice to give up a 50 yard reception or interfere and get a 15 yard penalty, they'll interfere every time. You're basically rewarding the defense for committing a penalty if it's beyond 15 yards.
