What was Mahomes seeing at 1:20 in this video? He ends up checking it to Pacheco, but he saw somebody deep. Anyone know who was downfield on this play? |
Overtime Play that Almost Was
It was a corner route to Kelce. But not as deep as you would think. It was like 5-10 yards past the sticks. It was a good sneaky coverage by the defense and Mahomes seemed to it at the last second. Simms (or someone can’t remember who) talked about this play on the all 22 and felt it would have been picked.

Looks like he wanted Kelce on the sideline. They had everyone covered up.

Thanks for the image!
Kelce looks risky there. Rice looks more open, depending which direction he ends up going from there. I'm glad Pacheco has ended up a reasonable option in the passing game. |
That play is a prime example of Mahomes learning to be more Brady like.
He took the checkdown and lived for another day. |
i also kinda wonder if that little "OH LOOK IM GOING DEEP" head fake by mahomes wasn't designed to get the rusher to attack the ball
kinda looks like a little deke to open up a throwing lane to pacheco |

It looked like a crosser with Rice and Kelce, hoping that there's a breakdown in coverage and they bite on one of them. But it was totally covered, and Mahomes smartly takes the checkdown.

Yeah, that video does a great job going through it. Downfield wasn't there.
Didn't realize Pacheco went to the ground on that play. Love football for this- so many things happening all at once. Crazy how these dudes process all of it in real time. |
Romo: Ohh, they (9ers) shouldn't've done that.
He'll never have a comment as good as that; might as well hang 'em up now, Tony. |
The real play that never was is what made Rice upset. End of reg the ball was snapped poorly and Mahomes tried to get Kelce in the end zone. A good snap and Rice would have it over the middle for the TD. He was wide open. No OT would have been needed.

Forced throws on 3rd or 4th down are acceptable. There's nothing worse than forcing a throw on 1st down. Glad he didn't fire it there.
