Two-time NBA champion and Hall of Famer Bill Walton has died of cancer at the age of 71, the NBA announced Monday.

"Bill Walton was truly one of a kind," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. "As a Hall of Fame player, he redefined the center position. His unique all-around skills made him a dominant force at UCLA and led to an NBA regular-season and Finals MVP, two NBA championships and a spot on the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams.

"Bill then translated his infectious enthusiasm and love for the game to broadcasting, where he delivered insightful and colorful commentary which entertained generations of basketball fans. But what I will remember most about him was his zest for life. He was a regular presence at league events -- always upbeat, smiling ear to ear and looking to share his wisdom and warmth. I treasured our close friendship, envied his boundless energy and admired the time he took with every person he encountered."

Walton originally joined ESPN in 2002 as a lead analyst for NBA games before shifting to college basketball in 2012. He was named one of the top 50 sports broadcasters of all-time by the American Sportscasters Association in 2009.

Damn cancer taking everyone.

Value this life. If you want to take the leap and go for your dream. Do it now.

Goofy as can be as announcer but was enjoyable. RIP Bill Walton

Great player, but maybe a better announcer. Certainly, one of basketball's greatest characters, on or off the court. He'll be missed. RIP, Bill.

Definitely one of a kind

This one hurts. Loved Bill as an announcer. Never knew what he might say, and often it was about something completely unrelated to the game, but then he'd say something incredibly poignant about the game.

RIP big fella. Hope you are in the big jam in the sky.

This one sucks. Bill Walton was a very interesting guy. The wife and I just wrapped up watching The Luckiest Guy in the World not too long ago.

His performance in 1973 against Memphis State will never be matched.

Nobody is grateful that either is dead

I had no idea he was sick. Remember him more as a player than announcer. Anybody know what kind of cancer he was battling?

Bill Walton calling a Jayhawk game high AF is one of the highlights for me.

We lost to Arizona State (I think it was Arizona State) but I personally saw Walton getting high with one group of students, and I am guessing he probably smoked his own, or took a gummie or something, even before that.

I liked him calling games on TV, either college or pros, but after seeing him bring joy to pretty much every person he interacted with, I couldn't have a higher opinion of him.

"That's A HORRIBLE CALL!"
RIP Greatful Red.
