NFLPA wants to change OTA’s and training camp

Mid June? Man the NFL really is trying to make this league year round. They don’t like that dead period in Summer

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">End of OTAs? The NFL Players Association is working to finalize a proposal to overhaul the offseason starting as soon as 2025, eliminating voluntary on-field work in the spring in favor of a longer training camp ramp-up, with players reporting in mid-June to early July, per… <a href="https://t.co/nQa9TmKCGO">pic.twitter.com/nQa9TmKCGO</a></p>&mdash; Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) <a href="https://twitter.com/TomPelissero/status/1795445022793334866?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 28, 2024</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Basically, the idea here would be to roll an extended, OTA-style ramp-up — strength and conditioning, non-padded work, etc. — straight into training camp without a six-week break/de-escalation in between. A major change. <a href="https://t.co/gVgVDiYmGj">https://t.co/gVgVDiYmGj</a></p>&mdash; Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) <a href="https://twitter.com/TomPelissero/status/1795447761594089728?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 28, 2024</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">So not an end to OTAs.. seemingly just a readjustment of when they’d be<br><br>They did something similar during Covid.. I believe most of the guys loved it for their bodies and such going into training camp <a href="https://t.co/BCAUCnsq0z">https://t.co/BCAUCnsq0z</a></p>&mdash; Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) <a href="https://twitter.com/PatMcAfeeShow/status/1795446976655339780?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 28, 2024</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I think a summer league might be interesting if the League ever wanted to do that.

It could be all those guys who don’t have a great chance of making the roster but get invited to camp. UFAs, late round draft picks, etc.

Gives those guys a chance to show what they can do and “washed” players get a chance to show they still have it.

Maybe 6-8 games over the summer. Could play on small college fields or wherever.

I would think this would be better, especially if/when they go to the 18 game season.

Seems logical to me.

The current level of preparation seems to be working well for the Chiefs.

So, in conclusion, **** this idea.

**** THAT! I want to keep what's kept my favorite team, the Kansas City Chiefs winning the last two super bowls!

NFL probably doesn't want this. They use OTA's to stay a little relevant year round.

This has to do with increasing the season..you prepare people for it by having training camps start in June...so when they start a week earlier no one really cares.

Question...with the NFL adding an extra game a couple of years ago as well as them adding another soon...does that affect player contracts? I mean, you negotiate based on how may regular season scheduled games you have to play in...doesn't the NFL have to pay everyone extra (ie: alter the contracts) for the extra game?

Only in that more revenue equals a larger cap equals higher salaries.

20 week season. 2 byes. 18 games. 2 preseason games. Start a week earlier than they do now.

Delicious.

Longer OTA's and training camp, shorter pre-season (2 games) and longer season (18 games) with 2 byes. :hmmm:

Seems a lot more helpful to the guys that are 45-90 on the roster to get game time to adjust to pro systems and standards and put real game snaps on film to boost their chances at striving on another franchise if they don’t survive the cutdowns. Will be particularly helpful for developing a raw young QB to be a reliable backup.
