Zone 4 Out: Western Channel No enemy Zone 5: France (out of fighter range) No enemy Zone 6: France (Entering Target Zone) No enemy. Redcoats58 will have to sit out the traditional trip to the pub afterward, too. (Game note: bummer for kcfanintitanhell. He had a lucky rabbit’s foot that let him reroll the dice when he took his serious injury. The reroll was a KIA.) |
And now the missions start to get fun

Fighters are waiting for them at every opportunity, and additional German fighters have come up to pull away the fighter cover. Someone knew about this mission. 2 Fw190s attack philfree fires, misses pennywise fires, misses Tk13 fires, misses Fw misses, breaks off attack Fw scores 1 hit -superficial damage to bomb bay Zone 5: France (out of fighter range) 1 Me109 attacks Ajkcfan fires, misses Me scores 1 hit -superficial damage to pilot compartment Me circles, attacks again philfree fires, misses Ajkcfan fires, misses Talisman fires, misses Me misses, breaks off attack 2 Me109s, 1 Me110 attack philfree fires, misses Tk13 fires, misses Hawaiianboy fires, hits Me109 Ajkcfan fires, misses Me110 misses, breaks off attack Me109 sweeps in and plants 8 hits into El Duderino! -superficial damage to nose -pilot compartment – SNR takes a serious wound as a shell goes through an artery in his left thigh and then shatters his right knee. Fw scores 5 hits -superficial damage to bomb bay -pilot compartment – the control cables are damaged but still operable -port wing - #1 engine is hit and dies. Unfortunately, the propeller is windmilling, and Enddelt can’t feather it. -port wing - #1 engine’s oil tank is hit. Oil begins streaming out of the engine. -waist – control cables to the rudder are severed. There will be no more controlled yawing on this trip. Enddelt is having trouble up front. The #1 engine won’t feather, which means that the plane yaws left at high speed. Enddelt has to slow down to a very low speed to maintain control, and the busted rudder isn’t helping. Combined with the loss of the #1 engine and both waist gunners, El Duderino is going to be a sitting duck at the target. “We’re aborting,” Enddelt decides, and is about to announce it over the intercom as the 3 Fw190s circle around for another attack. philfree fires, misses pennywise fires, misses Talisman fires, misses Ajkcfan fires, kills Fw190 Radarchief fires, kills Fw190 Hawaiianboy fires, misses Fw scores 1 hit -pilot compartment – BZZBZZBZZBZZTTTTTT – All of the gauges in the cockpit drop to zero. The cockpit’s electrical system has been knocked out. Enddelt hears philfree say, “Hey, my elec-“ and then remembers the hiss of the damaged oxygen system. Ripping off his seat belt, he’s a step too slow as an electrical spark ignites the leaking oxygen. The cockpit explodes into flames, engulfing an unconscious SNR. Flames momentarily engulf Enddelt, and AJKCfan leaps forward with an extinguisher to put them out as the plane begins a slow, unmanned bank right. A stunned and injured Enddelt stumbles toward the back of the plane as chaos erupts. Ed Duderino slowly turns onto its back and points nose first toward the ground. AJKCfan is the only one who knows the situation and yells, “Bail Out! Bail Out!” as the other crew members simply yell in surprise. It’s every man for himself at this point. Rookie Left Waist Gunner Mile High Mania was already KIA aboard the plane, and is buried with it. Copilot SNR (11), well, we won’t talk about it. It was ugly. Burning cockpit, unconscious with a serious wound, diving plane. Right Waist Gunner Tk13 (2) was seriously wounded already, and despite his best efforts, can’t make it to the escape hatch. He rides the plane down and dies in the crash. Pilot ENDelt260 (11) was grabbed by Radio Op Radar Chief and hauled to an escape hatch. The two jump out together, and Radar Chief pulls Enddelt’s rip cord for him before kicking away to open his own. Enddelt, painfully burned, floats to the ground where he’s mercifully met quickly by German troops. He spends the rest of the war convalescing in a German POW camp. Engineer AJKCfan hoped to run through the plane to give the bailout order, but ended up being thrown down into the nose when the plane nosed down. He gives the order to philfree and Talisman, who had both already figured it out, and the three bail out together. AJKCfan hits the ground in the middle of a vineyard, and huddles amongst the vines for an hour as German troops sweep the area. With no chance of escape, he can do nothing but wait as they draw near, and then surrenders. Tail Gunner hawaiianboy (11) heard philfree’s initial message about losing electricity, then ended up facing straight up with smoke billowing into his pod. Putting two and two together, he sends a bailout message over the now-dead intercom and clambers out his escape hatch. Floating to the ground, he ends up in an open field. He hides in a small barn for most of the next day, then makes a break for it, having no idea where he is. He is captured without incident, dirty and hungry, walking down a dirt road seven days later, heading north toward the coast. Bombardier philfree (11) gets the unenviable task of bailing out underneath a burning, diving plane. After a near miss evading the port wing, he floats to the ground near a small village. Debating his options, he heads to a house and knocks on the door. The family hustles him in, and soon a platoon of villagers descends. He is hustled to a different home in the village, but after a door to door search, the Germans find him hiding in a root cellar almost exactly 24 hours after the crash. He surrenders. Ball Turret Gunner PennyWise (11) has been here before, having been thrown out of an exploding plane over the Netherlands in Mission 9 and making his way back. The ball turret is a different game, though, since there’s no parachute there. With no electrical system, he hand cranks his turret into position as the plane accelerates into a vertical dive, and opens up the hatch into the plane. Smoke is filling the fuselage, and his parachute is nowhere to be found. However, there’s a body dangling from its tether at the left waist gun position. PennyWise makes his way to milehighmania and quickly decides that he won’t be needing his chute any more. After a painstaking and interminable struggle to remove the chute, he puts it on himself and dumps out of the plane at a scant 3,000 foot altitude. Floating to the ground, he watches El Duderino nail a home in a small village in a massive explosion. Pennywise makes a smooth landing, throws away his chute, and starts to find the nearest home in the village. However, he notes that the streets are crawling with Germans and instead ducks back into the woods. No help there. He walks the other direction…and walks...and walks. The next day he locates a road, and follows the road for another day. Finally locating a farmhouse, he knocks on the door, but the farmer, his eyes wide, shakes his head and slams it. Now paranoid, Pennywise decides to just head north. Nine days after the crash, he is surrounded by German soldiers as he steals apples from an orchard on his way to the coast. He surrenders. Navigator Talisman (11) and Radio Op. Radar Chief (11) hit the ground near each other and take off running together. They locate the same village nearby, and an elderly woman runs out and motions them into her home. Once inside, she pries a board loose from the floor and frantically motions them to it. For the next several hours, they hide in the spiderweb-infested crawl space as jackbooted German footsteps come in and out of the house, cringing at the yelling they can’t understand. The next day, some bread, cheese, and wine is hurriedly passed down to them. That evening, a trio of men and a woman pull them out, and they take a quick bath and change into civilian clothes. In halting English, one of the men explains the plan. He will accompany them by train to Paris, where they will then transfer and take another train to the coast. Since the train is full of German soldiers, the Frenchman will portray their caretaker and they will portray two mentally challenged mutes named Renfrew and Jacques. After another day of delay buying train tickets, the trio sets out, the two Americans convincingly playing their roles. Despite sharing a train car with three German officers and half a dozen enlisted men, they make the six hour ride to Paris without incident, and then successfully transfer to the coastal train. At Normandy, they disembark, hide out in another safe house, and the following night, they wade out in the moonless dark to a small dinghy dispatched by a British spy vessel. The next night, they’re raising a toast to their fallen crew in the British town of Rye. No bombing run. Aftereffects Since two crew members will report for duty, El Duderino will fly again. Eligible for next mission Pilot XXX Copilot XXX Bombardier Talisman (11), promoted Navigator XXX Engineer Radar Chief (11), promoted Radio Op. XXX Tail Gunner XXX Ball Turret Gunner XXX Right Waist Gunner XXX Left Waist Gunner XXX Cripes. They’d been attacked by 19 planes, and still weren’t even close to the target. That flight was doomed. |

Or not. Sucked to be you on that one. |
 Wow. Can't believe I made it out of that one. Now that I'm promoted to Bombardier, at least my wife will stop bragging about having a higher rank.
But then again, I always liked her on top. |
Yeah, I got a chuckle out of the fact that the Replacement Crew HR officer managed to make it out. If we get any complaints of favoritism, I may have to drown you in a tragic "slip in the bathtub" accident, but at least you made it out of France fair and square.

The outboard port section of the horizontal tail has been sheared off. “I think a falling engine hit us,” he reports, and describes the damage. I finally hit something, but then I died yet again... on to my 4th crew I believe... my motto should be "Well, no luck is still luck, even if it isn't luck."
Heaven forbid I get paired with morphius... we'd end up getting assigned to the Enola Gay then watch as the bomb hatch jammed and the atomic bomb blew up inside the plane... |
Why do I always gotta be the co-pilot with the mortal wound to the thigh who is rederred unconscious after massive bleeding, only to be engulfed in flames in the pilot compartment on a flight that all the German pilots knew about?
|
I think i want back in the ball..............
Thanks to Bowser and Dartgood for hauling me back in, I think they were scared of the family recipe falling into german hands, but that is okay, the Germans will spend years trying to figure out what that long, smelly brown cloud that was behind the our B-17. I have come to the conclusion that the enemy pilots are trying to kill me! I know, I know, it's a bit of a shock to me also, they must want the 'shine...umm first aid tonic recipe awful bad. |
