I imagine Martin has some sort of mental defect that makes it so that he just doesn't handle things very well in general, thus the "bullying" ending up giving him PTSD-like symptoms. It also doesn't help that he is a shitty football player that was on the verge of being replaced, so I imagine that stress didn't help things.
