Wrote the man who never played the game.
I don't even care that he didn't even play in H.S. let alone college, but a person who wrote that never once as a kid put on his sweats, favorite T-shirt and met his friends after school at a park, vacant lot, or a school field to play football with his friends. Snowing outside? Awesome. Put on another sweatshirt, pajamas or long underwear under your sweats (or jeans)and Wonder bread bags over your socks. Pick teams and mark the corner of the goal lines with a bike, and a trash can. The kid with the big arm would "kick off" and it was on...nobody got more than a bloody nose or jammed fingers, and you'd play long after dark. The score was something like 56-49, and you would talk shit to the other team after scoring as each side would get ready for the next kickoff, "losers walk, sucka!". People slowly driving by through the ice and snow couldn't help but stare; women would think "they must be freezing", and men would be thinking "wish I was out there."
Whenever I go home and drive by that park all I can think of are those games. And man, whether it's tailgating at Arrowhead in December or watching games like the ones last Sunday I think THAT is what makes football awesome.
Bayless doesn't love football. He doesn't even know it.
