I guess I see them as a collapsible cushion that allows your head to rattle around in the can and a hindrance to proper helmet fitting. I seem to remember almost needing two hands to pull the helmet on and them not wanting any movement or "rattle" once it was on.
Watching Lewis flip his helmet off by simply hitting the straps made it seem obvious his helmet is just sitting on his dread decorated pile of slow.
