[EDIT: I just realized you said "Olympic opening ceremony." I didn't watch that, and I don't even know who sang for it. But if it was an operatic singer, I'm still going to leave this here. Substitute "Renee Fleming" for what's-her-face and you get the same thing. Unless it was a fake operatic singer like some Broadway bitch. Or Susan Boyle. In which case I don't care.]
I'm going to assume you think Bruno Mars is better than Renee Fleming because you like either his voice or his music better.
That's personal preference. It doesn't mean he's better. At all.
"Better" to me means more capable of doing more types of music. As a classically trained singer, Fleming has likely twice the range that Bruno Mars does. She can sing in a variety of tempos and rhythm speeds. When she sings fast notes, she doesn't have to link them together through a single breath legato. She can actually PUNCTUATE each note by using just her diaphragm. She can put a spin on notes that Bruno Mars can't even dream of, but she can also do straight tone stuff if she wants to (although Bruno Mars isn't necessarily a straight-toned singer).
Finally, guess what Fleming did for the first time in years? She sang the national anthem LIVE. That's something everybody's girl Whitney Houston didn't even ****ing do. That's the kind of shit you can do when your decades of training supports your talent.
As for why I know more about music than you do, I'm a ****ing music scholar. That's my actual full-time job. That has nothing to do with why Renee Fleming is better than Bruno Mars, but since you brought it up, I thought I may as well mention it.
It's impossible to judge the aesthetic value of Bruno Mars against Renee Fleming. But if we were to have a singing competition to see who is BETTER and the BETTER musician, Renee Fleming wins it hands down. It's not even a close contest.
