It's the same reality as the 9-0 Chiefs... the schedule is reality. The only difference is that WSU proved they could play with the big boys last March, so they'll get some benefit of the doubt this year.
They can only play the teams on their schedule and a bunch of other cliches, but big wins mean so much more than any single loss. It's safe to assume the floor of any team is pretty low for a number of reasons, so what a team has to prove is how high the ceiling is for them. Maybe fans would look down on one loss to Creighton or whoever, but the committee would see it as a positive as long as they weren't obliterated, since it factors into SoS and determining that ceiling.
They'll get their chance, just like the Chiefs.
