I agree duncan, adding the part with robb's wife in the show was a nice way to make it more impactful even for book readers who new what was coming for Robb and Catelyn.
One of the more impactful parts of the Red wedding for me in reading it was the effect on poor Arya (she's one of my favorite characters in the books). Had to watch her dad be killed, then was on her own and scrambling to make it back to her family, and just as she is right there about to be reunited with them, her mom and brother are snatched away from her as well. This line from the books always broke my heart:
"I have a hole where my heart should be, she thought, and nowhere else to go."
