As Silock said, it's really a result of preference. I'm the type of eater that, once I get started, I want to EAT. Like, really freaking EAT. If I have a "little snack" like a few almonds or something, I'll end up eating 30 almonds. If I have a couple of carrots, I'll eat 10. I've always been like that, but I've always been very active and been blessed with a good metabolism. As I've gotten older, it's harder to keep off the weight. Fasting works VERY well for me as a way to control calories without having to control portions (which I find more challenging than just not eating).
I have a buddy who I work with who is a former NFL player and still looks like a power lifter. Just absolutely huge. Probably 6'6" and weights, I bet, close to 300 lbs... and is solid muscle. Just a huge NFL lineman build.
He's always astounded when we eat together, because I absolutely bury him in portions and eat WAY more than he does (and I look like a pretty skinny guy at 6'2" 190 lbs). One difference is that he's snacked (and his snacks are something to behold) throughout the day, while I haven't eaten anything.
