I've often thought the NFL would be wise to add an additional tag for a player who is the true "franchise" player. It can only be applied one time to a player that was selected by the team in question to pretty much keep a fan favorite in his "home" city.
The trick is determining how the kid gets paid. I think a "franchise star" tag should enable a team to stick a player, such as Jamaal Charles, on the roster with a cap hit that's only the average salary for that position but the big money is paid totally from the league itself and for a set amount of money and time that applies to anyone with the "star" designation. Or, the "star" tag enables a team to pretty much write off all or most of the cap hit for the player but be negotiated with a deal from the club for however much they want to spend.
