It would still seems odd to me that someone that could bike 50 miles at a good pace cant run 3 miles at a decent one.

It's called being good at what you train for. You are good at running because you run. You probably wouldn't be great at biking although the running would carryover a bit more than my training. However, if you would have to squat/dead, you would be sunk. I hope you are starting to catch on...being fit isn't just about running.
