I try to use iso machines & cables for stuff like lateral raises, rear delt work. Gives you more resistance through the entire range of motion rather than just when your lever (arm) is parallel with the floor. Sounds weird but if your doing seated DB laterals with 20lbs for example, your only getting the full 20lbs resistance when your arm is parallel. At the bottom and as you start your raise, there is less resistance. Cables give you whatever is on the stack at all times it feels like.
Maybe my explanation is off but cables just feel more tension IMO than say a front plate raise.
