Hampton Roads, Virginia is nice. Large metro area but you wouldn't know it since the Chesapeake Bay cuts the area in half. The Peninsula is generally less populated and more laid back then the Southside. Cost of living is pretty low considering unless you are looking for Bay front or riverfront property. Hurricanes can be a problem.
The advantage is you are a few hours from the Outer Banks, DC, and Richmond.
The west side of the Puget Sound is really nice but more expensive. You are out of the Seattle metro area but close enough that getting there is not a problem. It is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Lots of outdoor things to do both on the water and on land. If you like mountains the Cascades and Olympics are right there. Earthquakes are somewhat common but lower intensity. Mud and landslides after heavy rain can be a problem as the land goes from sea level to mountain range in a very short distance.
