There was a movement to make Donald Glover Spider-man once upon a time. I would have been fine with that because I am a fan of his and I don't care if Spidey is black. If the movement was to cast, I don't know, Kristin Bell or Shailene Woodley or something, I might have taken issue with it because a lot of the character is defined by his relationships which are in turn affected by his gender. It just kind of depends on what is intrinsic to the character. I think a lot of people get too bogged down in how a certain character has been portrayed to the point that they think it can't be different.

Look at Daniel Craig as Bond. People flipped out that he was blonde (even though Bond is blonde in the books). Once the movie came out, suddenly everyone loved him cause it DIDN'T ****ING MATTER. And yet, people don't remember that. They just want the actor to look like the cartoon.
