Most of these players don't even want to go to school or get an education. Why should they have to pay tuition if the only reason they're getting an education is because it's a pre-req to playing football? If this were baseball, they'd have the option to opt out of that education, go to the minor leagues, and get paid for it. In basketball, you can declare eligibility after one year.
A lot of these are poor kids with no money. The "benefits" give them a place to stay, but it doesn't buy them food and basic living expenses. These kids can earn money on their own, but the NCAA regulates that too.
