Here's the Hootie 2.0 theory:
2007: Mangini (former Patriot employee) gets tired of losing to NE ... turns them in for cheating tactics they used FOR YEARS while Mangini was an employee.
NFL: Uh oh.
Patriots: **** that guy! Trader.
It snowballs. People start coming forward.
Full investigation launches.
*FAST FORWARD*
Gets to Goodell. It's bad. REALLLLLLLLY BAD. A team that has just won 3 Super Bowls in 5 years cheated. Really terribly cheated. New commissioner. Biggest sport in America by far.
*DAMAGE CONTROL*
Story spirals out of control. Public wants to know answers. How bad did they cheat?
The NFL and Goodell knows it can never get out. They don't want the integrity of the game challenged. How can they nip this one in the bud??!
Easy. Destroy the evidence. Levy fines and make the Pats forfeit a draft pick. Easy. Don't let the public ever know what happened ... but let them know the Pats were punished and eventually everyone will forget and no one will care.
Mission accomplished.
Until deflate-gate.
Roger has got to be pissed this time. They've already covered one thing up for the Pats ... now?
After bountygate, I expect Belichick to serve a lengthy suspension.
