But there are certain things you can't put a stat on when evaluating players defensively. Like for example, who is the better athlete? Who has better mobility to move around from side to side and can cover more range around the corners and in between the bases? Who has greater leaping ability? Who can transition the ball better from glove to throwing hand? Who has better hip movement? Who is better at anticipation and timing plays or reacting where the ball is going to be or go?
You can put stats on these things. But I'll just say this, Donaldson wasn't a natural third basemen. Remember, he was drafted as a catcher. Had he started as a natural at third base, he'd probably be more ahead defensively today.
