There are a few roads in Springfield where one lane ends after a few hundred feet or yards after a stoplight. If I'm first in line and in the lane that doesn't end, and I see the car behind me get over in order to be the first person in the other lane, I stay even with them the entire way to where their lane ends....no matter how fast they try to go. And I have a straight 6, so if they decide to try to gun it, I can still do the same thing most of the time. Once we're to where their lane ends, I don't let them in. If they end up getting back directly behind me, I slow down to just under the speed limit for a little while.
