There were some rumblings that he was fomenting some of the unrest prior to the 'strike'. I never heard anything firsthand but it is believed that he may have encouraged some of the players to involve themselves in the Butler situation (which obviously then spiraled out of control).
I don't doubt that he played a pretty substantial role in it, to be honest. He was very much involved with the players and could easily have been one of the primary sounding boards for black players. That said, the dude was !@#$ing good at what he did and he'll be a big loss.
