The guy needs to wise up and either wear the upgraded gear or work with a manufacturer to design something with better protection that he feels comfortable wearing.
He's a gold glove, All star catcher in MLB, it's not going to be a problem with finding some designers to fashion some custom gear and have it fabricated.
