Unfortunately most of the time things haven't worked all that well on the series to date are when they tried to take things off in their own direction, rather than following the books.

Complain about how long it takes him all you want, but don't think for a second this series would be anything at all without the foundation of the books...

Frankly I'm actually more worried that HBO can't do it without him, and rather than spoiling anything from book 6, this season's just going to be an incoherent trip completely off the rails. While jumping a shark.
