One of the GRR books spends 500 pages on who take over the Iron Islands. A large part of the books largely ignored to this point. Most of these events took place a season or two ago in the TV timeline.
I thought at the time reading this that it was a huge waste of time because I didn't see how it all tied into the whole Westeros story line.
