Funny, I don't think he's particularly useful when DJ goes down. Mauga can't even begin to do what DJ does; just too athletically limited.

That said, when we have DJ and he's allowed to play the Ted backer role, he's a pretty solid football player who came a long way last year in maintaining his responsibility and giving up his body to make the play.

When he's replacing DJ, he's a liability. When he's playing alongside him, he's no worse than serviceable and at times was pretty good.

Mauga has been supplanted in his role as DJ's backup. If DJ goes down, March takes his spot. Mauga serves a purpose, IMO - but it isn't what either of you seem to think. As a serviceable starter alongside DJ, I think he has some value. And as a guy that knows the defense well enough at this point, it's just one less thing that DJ and Berry have to worry about when aligning things.
