Except, I doubt he gets $12 / year unless the cap total takes a healthy jump. Besides the fact that nothing with respect to the actual contract discussions between his agent and the team have been actually verified, and this has fueled speculation that there's acrimony between the parties.
Berry may very well not be affordable, and the Chiefs might simply not have the cap flexibility to re-sign him? No one actually knows.
If I was Dorsey, I would rather tag him for a year and see how he does with a full season under his belt and another 16 months out from his remission to get a better lay of the land before deciding to hand out a big contract.
It's certainly the more cautious and smarter play and in no way prevents you from still being able to offer a new contract when you have a better assessment of Berry .
