As a side note, that picture above was when Owen received a medal of valor, the department's highest honor.
His wife is an arson investigator, also with Los Angeles County Sheriff. I can't verify this, but it's being widely circulated here that he was 2 days shy of his retirement.
Small consolation that his wife mother, and kids were apparently able to get to the hospital to be with him before he died.
