Houston gets a pass for his "strange" injury situation but he's worked hard to get back in a very short 9 months. There's not much more anyone could ask of him.
Smith's deal is odd because after improving over each of the last 4 years, his play has taken a steep decline this year, which logically, shouldn't have happened to a 32 year old QB.
32 year old ROLB in Hali? Not unexpected. 33 year old ILBer in DJ? A bit of a surprise but not totally unexpected.
But Maclin? 28 years old, $11 million per, 1,000 yard receiver last year? It's completely bizarre and utterly unexpected, especially when the offense is essentially built around him and it's struggled in his absence.
Maclin's regression is even worse because unlike Houston, who's been ably replaced by Dee Ford, no other WR on the roster has filled that gap.
