Stats-wise, the Chiefs are not a very good team. They've lucked into or relied on defensive/special teams scores to win. They prevent the other team from scoring a lot, but their rankings in nearly all major categories are not of a super bowl contender.

Out of the top 10 teams in both the AFC & NFC, the closest I can come to a comparison team is Tampa Bay and even they rank better in nearly every category - except points per game & scoring defense. Every other team does one or two things really well (top 10) whether it's offensively or defensively.
