If you want to say Alex Smith isn't elite or a top tier QB, I'll agree with you. But where some of you who criticize him get out of hand is when you say he sucks. He does not. It's not even debatable. He's an average QB and a good game manager.
He's fine until we find something better. HOF QBs don't grow on trees if they did every team would have one. There is no need to panic and act like QB is a desperate need on this team and that we have to get rid of Alex Smith right away. A lot of teams who panic and get desperate when it comes to QB position end up making really bad mistakes. Reid or Dorsey are not going to do that which is why Alex Smith will probably be our starter next season unless a better option is out there and right now I don't see one.

Alex is definitly what you could call an average QB. He has done well the last few years with the Chiefs but we have come to realize that the offense will never be explosive with him and you are unlikely to ever win a SB with him. As this team is built to win now, you have to search for a better option now if it is out there.
I feel like the Chiefs signing Romo is similar to the Broncos signing Mannning back a few years ago. It is definitly a risk but one which could pay off big time.
