Additionally, the Targaryen dynasty ruled for 300 years until the Mad King who's evil acts were responsible for Robert's Rebellion. Many of those old houses throughout Westeros were already there when the Targaryen's ruled. Some for longer periods of time preceding the Targaryens. Perhaps they were descendents of the First Men?

The Northern houses (Starks, Glovers, etc.) are descended from the First Men, and are very proud of it. The Dornish are descended from the Rhoynar, and pretty much everyone else in Westeros are descended from the Andals. Most of Westerosi culture comes from the Andals, including the Faith of the Seven. All of these ethnic groups existed in Westeros before the Targaryens invaded.
