This is constantly forgotten about.
She was shown to be an ass-kicker on Jakku well before she ever used a lightsaber. Add in Kylo crushin' on her and telling her he could teach her the ways of his force or some such, it really isn't that far of a stretch to see Kylo getting his face sawed up like he did.
