Nah, that's not really true.
Look at a guy like John Williams, the most successful film composer of all time. The guy is 85 years old and still cranking out music. He's never had substance abuse problems.
Actually, the overwhelming majority of successful artists don't have substance abuse problems but those who do/did/had generally came from a "scene", like Seattle, in which heroin was the drug du jour and claimed the lives of many from that scene (Andrew Wood, Layne Staley and more).
There are thousands of orchestral musicians in symphonies across Europe (and some in the States) that absolutely phenomenal that don't have substance abuse problems.
In this case, she was sexually abused, dealt with bipolar disease and anorexia and had previously tried to commit suicide.
Have some modicum of talent and suicide are mutually exclusive.
