I don't really understand the consternation about possibly gutting the defense and starting over, except a key piece or two.
It was a bottom-third of the league unit. Things aren't going to get any worse. This group has abundantly proven that it can't beat a quality opponent in the postseason, even given 5 years to do it.
With Reid, Sutton, and this roster, the team is a pretender anyway. They might as well get a leg up on a potential window in 2-3 years, when all these pieces would have aged out anyway.
We are all excited about Mahomes, but it's likely he's going to turn the ball over more than Smith at least at first, and that more is going to be asked of the defense when we aren't playing as tight of a ball control offense (hopefully).
A rookie QB isn't going to take us to the Super Bowl, particularly on a team like this with many glaring weaknesses. It would be better to start building a defense for 2020 instead of trying to apply bandaids to this terminally ill unit.
