It simply comes down to this: If Peters was willing to sign an extension, this is a mistake. If he was unwilling to sign an extension - THIS YEAR - then this had to be done.
Berry, Smith and Houston contracts crippled this organization, because they weren't done on time. Once you're in the last year of a deal and the tag has to be used - you're already gonna pay too much.
You had to extend Peters this year to avoid going into his year 5 option trying to work out a deal. It would have made him the highest paid CB in the league, and we already had the highest paid S and OLB.
I loved Peters since day one. I still think he's a badass, but this is a good business move if his desire for a trade is in any way legitimate, or if the Chiefs couldn't get him to sign an extension.
It's a bitter pill to swallow, though.
