If they didn't get a 1st this year there was no reason to trade him now. Why not wait until closer to the league year? It only saves 1.3 mill in cap space. Why not see if any teams have interest once free agency begins unless you get blown away by an offer?
They had to trade Smith for the cap space. They can always trade Peters a month from now.
