My parents were never sports fans. I grew up in NJ in the 80s and became a Mets fan in 86 when they won the World Series. In the 90s I never followed football until I was in middle school and some friends brought home Tecmo Super Bowl. Christian Okoye was dominant and I started to use the Chiefs and then I started to follow them for real. The first game I vividly remember watching was the kicker that shall remain nameless fiasco. My father took me to Arrowhead for the first time a couple seasons later. We sat behind the bench. He read a book and never paid attention to anything happening on the field. The Chiefs beat the Bills on a last second defensive stop with Mark McMillian providing the theatrics. The next time was the Broncos playoff loss. And thus the heartache began.
When I meet people in KC, I typically lie and tell them I have family from Overland Park. The truth is going to the Outback Steakhouse at the Oak Park Mall has become a church-like experience for me.
