Jyn Erso was a fully developed character. We knew who her parents were, that she struggled most of her life to just stay alive, that she spent time in Imperial prisons, that she loved her parents deeply and that she gave her life with the hope of destroying the Emperor's most powerful weapon, the Death Star.
Her character had
so much weight.
Rey, on the other hand, was a Mary Sue. Even though she was a poor scavenger that lived in the burned out shell of an AT-AT, when faced with danger the first time in her life, she beat up male aliens, alluded Imperial soldiers, knew how to fly the Millennium Falcon, knew to how to "hotwire" a cargo ship in order to kill Rathars, had a Force vision and was able to defeat a fully trained Dark Side Force user.
We know nothing of her true character because everything's been easy for her. No struggle, no real resistance, no real challenges.
She's a Disney Princess.
