The 2011 Cardinals won the World Series. Matheny took over that team, which had several prime years left of Adam Wainwright, an excellent farm system (that ascended to #1 in Baseball before his first year), a plethora of homegrown pitching , and tremendous resources.
It absolutely was a great situation, and they won a ton of games in spite of him.
Over time, his stubbornness, his playing of favorites within his bible study group, and his general reputation made it a far less attractive destination for FAs while also making it a tough place for young players to succeed.
