Somehow today's cars know when to stop cranking. My 2011 Dakota has the conventional key switch, but all you have to do is click it to the start position for a second and it will crank on its own and stop once the engine starts running. Sometimes it does seem like it stays engaged a second or two too long and makes a unsettling grinding sound, which I'm sure is slowly destroying my starter. Built Ram tough and shit y'know.
