I think the 'iron sharpens iron' thing is overstated. It sounds great and makes sense in theory, but when you start to poke about, there's not a lot of real world support for it.
Otherwise the Patriots would get fisted in the playoffs after the annual cake-walk that is their division.

Yeah, it doesn’t work this way at all.
I played basketball against some guys that were proportionately better than me, and all that really happened is I pulled back some aggressive stuff and played to not get ****ing destroyed instead of going after guys. Then I’d go play with other guys and would have to reset my approach. It really wasn’t beneficial to consistently get my ass beat by dudes that were better.
